Dr. Desai Provides General Anesthesia and Nitrous Oxide for Children
Children often experience anxiety at the thought of a trip to the dentist. Even when we provide a comfortable environment and compassionate experience during your child’s visits to Kids World Dental, he or she might develop dental fears.
General anesthesia has been shown safe for children. Prior to your child's general anesthesia appointment, you will be called by our Anesthesiologist, at which point he will go over your child's health history and will provide you with pre-anesthesia instructions. If you opt for general anesthesia at Kids World Dental, here are some tips:
- Children under the age of 6: No solid foods or liquids for six (6) hours prior to appointment. Children age 6 and older: No solid foods or liquids for eight (8) hours prior to appointment. Water ONLY may be taken up to three (3) hours prior to appointment. Nothing may be taken for three (3) hours prior to the appointment.
- Have your child wear a short sleeve loose shirt. children should bring a light blanket. For children who do not wear diapers or pull ups, a change of clothes should be available. Do not wear makeup or nail polish. Contact lences must be removed before general anesthesia.
- A responsible adult must accompany the childto the office and remain during the procedures. Children should be in a car seat.
Nitrous Oxide is a gas that's combined with Oxygen to produce a a calming effect and a sense of well being when inhaled. Kids World Dental uses Nitrous Oxide to help a patient relax during dental procedures. When the dental procedure is over, the dentist will have the patient breathe only Oxygen for a few minutes to eliminate the effects of the Nitrous Oxide. Unlike general anesthesia, the patient should have a clear head within minutes of coming off of the Nitrous Oxide allowing them to function normally with no lingering effects. Nitrous Oxide is also known as laughing gas.
If you are in Modesto, Ceres, or Empire and are interested in general anesthesia for your child, contact Kids World Dental for an appointment.
